Geo duck harstene island5/30/2023 ![]() ![]() Geoducks are the most abundant marine animal in the south Puget Sound, with each adult clam filtering about 30 gallons of water every day. And since Evergreen is devoted to sustainable and environmentally conscious practices, the geoduck-a integral part of the Pacific Northwest ecosystem-is the perfect representative. It is a symbol of the essence of the college: accessible to all who are willing to dig deep-stable, yet flexible, and the antidote to departmental thinking and design that is the standard in most colleges and universities. It had to be the opposite of all the snarling, fierce, aggressive mascots typically seen in athletics. Founders of the college wanted a mascot that epitomized the difference between traditional schools and Evergreen’s innovative ideas. While on Harstine Island we had a significant negative tide and many residents took the opportunity to dig for geoducks, which are plentiful on the island.It’s easily the worst college mascot. Plus they sell Valvetech boat gas! The only gas I put into Sea Badger since it is formulated for boat motors to deal with ethanol. The staff is very friendly, the place is clean, cute and the little store has some amazing items in it. This little marina is in my top 5 favorite marinas ever visited. We ended each boat trip with a stop at the Fair Harbor Marina in Grapeview for ice cream. I even did a few cannonball jumps into the water from my perch upon one of the gunwales without rocking the boat. At 22.5 feet Sea Badger is not a big boat, but we accommodated 8 people (4 adults and 4 kids) very easily and I was amazed at how stable and even the boat sat with several parents sitting on the same gunwale. We did stop a few times just to ‘hang out’ on the water and enjoy the sunshine and swim a little. ![]() Sea Badger puts out a good size wake at low speeds. Almost too effortlessly as we had a few scares almost launching the kids (6-11 years old) without even trying. Sea Badger easily pulled a 4 person tube through the water effortlessly. It was a fun ride of approximately 20 miles to Olympia, completely flat water and very scenic views. We explored Anthony’s restaurant in Olympia. We invited another family down to spend some time with us and enjoyed our time together immensely, but on one occasion to escape from our lovely wives and kids, my buddy and I took Sea Badger out to do some exploring. While in the South Sound we did some cruising and some tubing. Top speed for Sea Badger is 5400 rpm and ~38 kts. Whatever time we lost bouncing around north of the Narrows, we made up south by going full throttle for stretches. From the Tacoma Narrows south, the water is like one big saltwater lake. We made it in a little over 2 hours averaging a hair less than 30 mph. 60 miles from Edmonds, WA, down Colvos Passage (west side of Vashon Island), past Gig Harbor, through the Tacoma Narrows, south of McNeil Island in Balch Passage, then through Drayton Passage, north to Case Inlet and then into Pickering Passage to the Harstene Pointe marina (Indian Cove). This was the first time we took Sea Badger to the South Sound. We happen to have a family cabin in the Harstene Pointe community. ![]() You can find it on a map easily once you know where to look. It’s funny, I live north of Seattle and when I tell people who were born and raised on the Puget Sound that I’m going to Harstine Island, 95% reply, “Where’s that?” For those who don’t know, it’s an island near Shelton, WA. Harstine Island is a big island in South Puget Sound that not many people north of Tacoma know about. ![]()
